Meet our new BDM, John Simmons

John joins us with a focus on our corporate managed services members. We welcome his 15 years in corporate travel and experience with popular brands such as Hogg Robinson and American Express. We are excited John is joining us during a growth phase of the AMS model and to hear his plans on developing the model, supporting members and helping Advantage navigate the dynamic business travel sector.

Could you share a little bit about your travel background?
I live in Hampshire and have worked in the corporate travel sector for over 15 years, initially working in operational roles for several corporate travel companies and managing day-to-day relationships for both offline and online clients. More recently, I have been working for a large global TMC as a client account manager where I was managing a portfolio of both European and Global SME clients.

Tell us about your role at Advantage
I have joined as a Business Development Manager specifically for the AMS membership. My initial aim is to get out and about, visiting members and building relationships. I am looking forward to starting to work with existing AMS members by delivering best-in-class service and solutions for them and their clients, as well as working to expand the membership by identifying and working with new businesses to join the programme.

What do you feel is the most valuable part of your role here at Advantage?
I feel I am joining Advantage at an exciting time, with many new products and initiatives for members either recently or shortly to be announced! So, one of my initial aims will be engaging with members and raising awareness of these products and how these will help them in supporting their clients.

What advice would you give to a potential travel agent looking to start a career in the industry?
It’s a constantly evolving industry, so work to build your network of partners and suppliers to support your business and always remember the personalisation of service is key to retaining and increasing your client base.

What is your favourite thing about working in the travel industry?
Meeting lots of different people and working collaboratively with partners and suppliers. Technology is a constantly evolving subject and it’s exciting to be part of projects that involve rolling out new products to members/ clients.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be to and why?
I would love to go back to Japan. A few years ago, I attended a friend’s wedding in Tokyo and spent a few days after the wedding exploring Kyoto and the surrounding area. A fascinating country and culture with mountains, tropical beaches and fascinating cities to discover. I would love to explore it further!
